The Natural Characteristics of Leather

Real Leather is a natural product. It breathes, is warm and has individual characteristics which are the natural charm and beauty of an animal hide. It will often display traces of its past, such as: Brand and healed scars, veins, stretch marks, and hair pore structure. These marks no way detract from the wearing qualities of the leather. With the passing of time and use it develops a patina which enhances its beauty.

Shade Variation

No two leather hides are the same and due to varying grain structure mentioned above. The dyes and finishes penetrate to differing degrees in different parts of the hide to give attractive variations. Whilst every attempt is made to achieve uniformity, this is not always possible.

Leather today, due to modern tanning processes and consumer requirements has a glove like feel and maintain its suppleness during the life of furniture. It is therefore, quite different from the firmer older materials that you may be used to. The combination of these two factors means that during the first few weeks of use, wrinkles and creases will form naturally in the leather. These are quite normal and should cause no concern.

General Care Instructions

Out of sight, out of mind – whilst busily dusting your table and televisions you may forget that just as much dust has settled on your new suite. A great deal of care and experience has gone into the manufacture of your new suite. Following these hints will help you prolong your new sofas life.

a) Dressing

A regular dressing practice must be maintained on this furniture. This involves the plumping up of all cushions, backs and arms on a daily basis.

b) Overall Cleaning

Dust regularly with a soft cloth. Do not use any ordinary polish, cream, detergents, solvents, varnish or stain removers. Lots of these contain bleach or similar so can damage or discolour the leather.

c) Sunlight and Heat

Your leather suite should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods as this may result in colour fading. Protect it best you can by drawing curtains and blinds. Also avoid leaving your sofas next to radiators or open fires.

d) Useful Tips

Your suite is designed to sit on in comfort, so please use it correctly for that purpose. Sitting on the edges of cushions or on the arms may cause distortion or permanent wear. Sharp objects such as toys, jewellery, buckles, and heels can also cause damage. Try to avoid animals climbing on or clawing the leather. Try to prevent the children from demonstrating their gymnastic skills on the sofa!

Nothing last forever –even your suite will wear out in time – but we hope that you will find this information helpful, and if you follow the advice given, your suite should remain pride of place in your living room.
